Making an extra $1,000 a month from a side hustle doesn’t have to be overwhelming. You don’t need a big audience, complicated funnels, or endless social media posting.

Instead, focus on solving a problem for a specific audience, packaging your knowledge into a product, and distributing valuable content consistently.

Here’s how to do it in five simple steps, using AI to streamline the process.

Step 1: Package Your Knowledge into a Digital Product (Fast & Easy with AI)

Everyone has knowledge, skills, or experiences that can be turned into a digital product.

The challenge is figuring out what yours are and how they can help others. This is where AI becomes your brainstorming partner.

Step 1A: Extract Your Best Product Idea

Start by answering these questions:

🔹 What skills, knowledge, or experiences do I have?

  • What do people ask me for advice on?
  • What problems have I overcome that others struggle with?
  • What skills have I developed that save time, money, or effort?

💡 Write your answers down. Now, let AI help you refine them.

Use AI to Identify Your Best Product Idea

Once you’ve listed your skills and experiences, ask AI to help you turn them into a valuable product.

Try this AI prompt:

“Here’s a list of things I know about: [paste your answers]. Based on this, what are 5 digital product ideas I could create that would be easy to sell and solve a real problem for people?”

AI will generate specific ideas—for example:

  • A “Beginner’s Guide to X” ebook
  • A “How to Overcome Y” step-by-step guide
  • A 5-day video mini-course on [topic]

Step 1B: Define Your Target Audience (AI Helps Here Too!)

Once you have a product idea, you need to make sure it’s solving a problem for the right people.

AI can help you define your audience:

Try this AI prompt:

“I want to create a [ebook/course/video] about [topic]. Who would benefit the most from this, and what are their biggest struggles?”

AI will suggest potential customers and refine your messaging.

Step 1C: Structure and Create Your Product Using AI

Now that you have your idea, AI can help you build the product faster than you ever could alone.

🔹 Want to create an ebook?

AI Prompt: “Create a detailed 5-chapter outline for an ebook on [topic]. Each chapter should solve a key problem.”

🔹 Making a mini-course?

AI Prompt: “Outline a simple 3-module course on [topic] with key lessons in each.”

🔹 Creating a video script?

AI Prompt: “Write a script for a 10-minute video explaining [topic] in a fun and engaging way.”

🔹 Need a downloadable guide or checklist?

AI Prompt: “Create a step-by-step checklist for someone who wants to [achieve goal].”

Once AI generates the structure, fill in the gaps with your personal insights, examples, and experiences.

✅ Upload your finished product to Gumroad or Stan.store.

  • Gumroad is free but takes 10% per sale.
  • Stan.store is $39/month but has no per-sale fees.

Pick the one that feels easiest for you!

Step 2: Start a Newsletter on Substack

You need an audience to buy your product, and building an email list remains the best long-term strategy for any online business

Unlike social media platforms, where algorithms can change overnight and limit your reach, an email list is something you own and control—giving you direct access to your audience without relying on external platforms.

Substack makes this process easier than ever because it combines content creation and email list growth in one place. With a built-in discovery features that help people find and subscribe to your newsletter, it’s frictionless for readers.

They can engage with your content in their inbox without needing to visit a separate website, which makes it one of the fastest ways to grow an engaged audience and start selling your product right away.

How to Get Started:

🔹 Sign up on Substack and create a free newsletter based on your niche.
🔹 Write one valuable article per week (see Step 4 for what to write).
🔹 Grow your audience passively with Substack’s built-in discovery features.
🔹 Mention your product naturally in your content. Example: “If you want a step-by-step breakdown, grab my [ebook/course] here!”

Step 3: Pick One Social Platform & Repurpose Your Content (AI Does This Too!)

While Substack is a great platform for building an email list and nurturing your audience, it has limited discoverability outside of its own network.

The best ways to increase your visibility are:

(a) Using Substack’s built-in Notes—a rapidly growing feature that acts like a social feed, allowing you to post short-form content, engage with other writers, and attract new subscribers directly within Substack.

(b) Choosing one additional social platform—Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, or LinkedIn—where your audience is most active.

Rather than trying to be everywhere, pick just one extra platform to focus on alongside Substack Notes. (You can use a scheduler to repurpose later).

Then repurpose your weekly Substack article into daily bite-sized posts, reels, or soundbites for both, which ensures you consistently reach new people and can engage with your audience, and funnel them toward your newsletter and product—without adding extra workload.

✅ One long-form article per week (on Substack).

✅ Break it into 7 daily mini-posts and share on:

  • Substack Notes (for more reach).
  • Your chosen social platform.

💡 How AI Helps:

  • Text posts? Use ChatGPT or Claude to extract key soundbites from your article and turn them into 7 short-form posts for Notes + social.
  • Video clips? Use Opus.clip to automatically break your video into 30-second clips for Reels, Shorts, or TikToks.
  • Audio clips? Use Descript to pull out the best snippets and turn them into shareable soundbites.

Step 4: What to Post? Talk About Challenges & Provide Solutions

One of the biggest obstacles to consistency is not knowing what to post. Instead of overthinking the term “content creation” (which often leads to creating content just for the sake of it), focus on solving real problems for your audience.

People engage with content that speaks directly to their struggles, so the best approach is to identify the biggest challenges in your niche and consistently provide solutions.

How to Generate Endless Content Ideas

Start by making a big list of questions your audience might have. You can do this by:

✅ Thinking about common struggles you’ve faced and overcome.
✅ Looking at FAQs in your niche (from forums, Quora, Reddit, Facebook Groups).
✅ Checking the comments and messages you get from your audience.

💡 AI Prompt:
“List 20 common struggles that [your audience] faces in [your niche]. Then, suggest practical solutions I could turn into long-form content.”

Once you have a list, use AI to help turn these into engaging content.

💡 AI Prompt:

“Suggest 10 newsletter topic ideas for a Substack focused on [your niche]. Make them engaging and problem-solving.”

Your Weekly Content Plan (Keep It Simple & Repeatable)

Instead of constantly coming up with new ideas, follow a structured posting schedule that maximizes your efforts:

📌 Monday: Publish one long-form article on Substack answering a key question or solving a major problem.
📌 Tuesday-Sunday: Repurpose that article into daily soundbites and share them on Substack Notes + your chosen social platform.
📌 Daily: Engage with comments, DMs, and conversations to keep growing your audience.

How to use AI for your repurposed content

Once you’ve written your long-form post, AI can help break it down into bite-sized pieces for daily distribution.

💡 AI Prompt:
“Break down this article into 7 short LinkedIn/TikTok/Facebook posts that each provide value but leave readers wanting to learn more.”

💡 AI Prompt:
“Summarize this article into 7 key takeaways I can post as short-form content over the next week.”

By following this simple but effective strategy, you’re consistently showing up, solving real problems, and driving traffic back to your newsletter and product—without reinventing the wheel every day.

Step 5: Keep Going Until You Hit $1,000 a Month (Then Scale!)

The biggest reason most people don’t reach their income goals? They give up too soon.

Success in this strategy doesn’t come from one viral post or a single product launch—it comes from consistent effort over time. Every time you show up, post valuable content, and engage with your audience, you’re building momentum.

Some weeks will feel slow. Some posts won’t get much engagement. But if you stick with it—continuing to share, refine, and improve—your audience will grow, your messaging will get sharper, and your sales will start to come in.

The ones who succeed aren’t necessarily the most talented or experienced—they’re the ones who keep going when others quit.

How the Numbers Work

  • Selling a $10 product? You need 100 sales per month (3-4 per day).
  • Selling a $50 product? You only need 20 sales per month (less than one per day).

How to Improve Over Time:

🔹 Test different messaging—if sales are slow, tweak your product positioning.
🔹 Engage with your audience—real conversations lead to sales.
🔹 Add more products once you hit $1,000/month. More offers = more income.

The key is to stay consistent, trust the process, and keep improving. If you do that, reaching $1,000 a month (and beyond) is inevitable. 🚀

Common Challenges & How to Overcome Them

🚧 “I’m not making sales.”
✔ Solution: Ask yourself: Does my product solve a painful problem? If not, refine it.

🚧 “Growing an audience is slow.”
✔ Solution: Be patient, engage daily, and keep posting valuable content.

🚧 “I don’t know what to post.”
✔ Solution: Every day, post:

  • A problem your audience faces.
  • A tip, solution, or personal story.
  • A link to your newsletter or product.

Final Thoughts: Keep It Simple & Keep Showing Up

This strategy works because it’s repeatable, scalable, and AI-powered.

Most importantly, it’s designed to be a fun side hustle. You’re not grinding away at something you hate; you’re sharing what you know, helping others, and getting paid for it.

✅ Extract your best knowledge
✅ Package it into a digital product
✅ Build an audience on Substack
✅ Post daily using AI automation

Do this for 90 days, and you’ll not only hit $1,000/month, but you’ll also create a flexible, enjoyable income stream that can scale to even more, all while working on something you actually enjoy. 🚀

Think you need to be a tech whiz to make money online? Think again!

For 50+ nomads, earning on the go is not only possible but can be incredibly fun.

Whether you’re parked up in your RV, sipping coffee in a cosy Airbnb, or enjoying a month-long stay in a new city, these ideas offer flexible ways to bring in some extra cash with minimal tech know-how.

1. Sell Handmade Crafts on Etsy

Got a knack for crafting, knitting, or making jewellery? Etsy is the perfect platform for creative types to sell their handmade goods.

You don’t need to build a website – just snap some good photos, write a description, and you’re set.

Bonus: It’s a brilliant way to turn a hobby into income, even from your RV or on the road.

Quick Start Guide

• Create an Etsy account and set up your shop.

• Use your phone to take high-quality photos of your crafts.

• Set realistic prices, calculate shipping costs, and start listing items. (Hot Tip, spend $2 a day on Etsy ads to get the ball rolling!)

2. Offer Virtual Tutoring or Coaching

If you’re a retired teacher, a language enthusiast, or have a skill others might envy (like playing the guitar or baking the perfect sourdough), offer one-on-one virtual tutoring or coaching. Platforms like VIPKid (for teaching English), Cambly, or Preply make getting started easy, even while travelling.

Online Tutoring

Quick Start Guide

• Sign up on platforms like VIPKid or advertise your services on Facebook groups.

• Use free tools like Zoom or Google Meet for sessions.

• Set a schedule that works across time zones if you’re travelling.

3. Sell Vintage Finds Online

If you love scouring thrift shops or flea markets, resell your treasures on platforms like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or Poshmark.

Vintage clothing, antique decor, and quirky finds often fetch higher prices online.

Perfect for nomads who love treasure hunting in local markets.

Quick Start Guide

• Take clear, detailed photos of your items.

• Research similar listings to set competitive prices.

• Pack lightweight items that are easy to ship while travelling.

Quick Start Guide

• List your skills and create a profile on Upwork or Fiverr.

• Offer services like inbox management, social media scheduling, or research.

• Use a calendar app to stay on top of tasks while travelling.

5. Write Simple Blog Posts or Articles

You don’t need to be the next Shakespeare to earn money writing online. Websites like Textbroker, WriterAccess, or iWriter connect you with clients who need simple blog posts, product descriptions, or articles.

As long as you can write clearly, you can get started.

3. Launch a Weekly Podcast

Tips to Get Started;

  • Sign up for a free account at podcasters.spotify.com
  • Plan your podcast format (solo, interview, storytelling, etc.)
  • Record your first few episodes using your phone or computer microphone

Hot Tip: Sound is key, so pick a spacious cupboard or carpeted small room to record or use a super good microphone. For recording on the go, I use the DJI Wireless Mic.

4. Interview Industry Experts

Utilize free video conferencing tools like Zoom to conduct and record interviews with experts in your field.

This not only provides valuable content for your audience but also helps you network and build credibility.

Tips to Get Started;

  • Create a free Zoom account at zoom.us
  • Reach out to potential guests via email or social media, or use a site like podcastguests.com or podmatch.com to find appropriate interviewees

Tips to Get Started;

  • Create a free Notion account at notion.so

  • Set up your payment details to receive funds from sales (without spending hours embedding a paypal button!)

The Path to $10K a Month

The caveat!

While these fabulous tools provide a free starting point, as I’m sure you’re aware, building a successful business requires commitment, focus, and time.

Here are some key points to remember:

  • Consistency is crucial. Regularly produce high-quality content across all your channels, for as long as it takes!
  • Focus on providing value to your audience before trying to monetize.
  • Build genuine relationships with your followers and other creators in your niche.
  • Be patient. It takes time to grow an audience and develop products that sell.
  • Continuously learn and adapt your strategy based on what works for your audience.
  • As your business grows, reinvest in premium tools and services to enhance your offerings.

What’s Stopping You?

With all these free tools at your disposal, the primary investment required is your time, effort and gumption.

The barriers to entry have never been lower, but success depends on your dedication, creativity, and ability to meet your audience’s needs.

Listen closely to feedback you get to your content, whether it’s likes, comments, shares or silence. As long as you’re consistent and in it for the long haul, you’ll soon get to know what resonates with your ideal customer.

Also while the tools to get started are free, building a sustainable business will require some financial investment as you grow. Be prepared to reinvest your earnings (or a percentage of) back into your business for the first few years to ensure growth and improvement.

By following this strategy and persistently working towards your goals, there’s no reason you can’t build a thriving online business that generates $10,000 or more per month.

The opportunity is there – it’s up to you to seize it. Good luck!

Get started today in my free 50+ Nomad group! Come and chat with a bunch of very lovely and very welcoming like-minded people, and share tips and strategies for boosting your income on the go, exploring new destinations, chasing dreams, and living your best life!

I started my affiliate marketing journey back in 2013.

I’d grown an audience who trusted me, I’d made some great connections with some awesome course creators, and I wanted to bring the two together.

Moving forward a few years affiliate marketing has been a fantastic route to make money and grow my network at the same time!

The challenge with affiliate marketing is that many people view it as an easy route into the make money online niche, but as with all business models, it takes time, commitment and unrelenting focus.

And if you think it’s just for the young kids, think again. Affiliate marketing is a perfect ‘assetless’ model as we get older and don’t want to spend the time or the money to create and sell our own products.

Let’s break down the steps so you know what it is, how to make money from it and how to get started affiliate marketing for beginners!

What is Affiliate Marketing and How Does it Work?

Affiliate marketing is a digital marketing approach where individuals or companies (affiliates) promote products or services of other businesses (merchants) and earn a commission for each sale, lead, or click generated through their unique affiliate link.

Since the early days of industrial mass production, product owners have paid commission to salespeople who can make a sale for them.

It’s a win-win for the product owner. Advertising and marketing cost a lot of money, so a large salesforce that gets paid only for results makes a lot of sense.

Affiliate marketing is a natural progression from the old-time traveling salesman, updated and refined for our online interconnected world.

You will usually find several parties involved in affiliate marketing.

The Product Owner. The person or organisation who manufacture or own the sales rights of the product or service on sale. They want to make more sales without directly investing in sales or marketing.

The Affiliate Network. A middleman organisation that manages the process of finding and paying affiliates for the product owner. (Sometimes the product owner will manage their affiliate program themselves).

The Affiliate Marketer. You! Someone who creates content, builds an audience, and recommends the audience purchases the product or service—sometimes called ‘the publisher’ by affiliate networks.

The Buyer. Because without a paying customer, affiliate marketing would not be possible!

affiliate process consumer to retailer to affiliate partner. Purchase> commision> promote

The Mechanics of Affiliate Marketing for Beginners

Let’s break down the key components and processes involved.

  1. The affiliate joins a program and receives a unique link or code.
  2. The affiliate promotes products or services using this link across various channels.
  3. A potential customer clicks on the affiliate link.
  4. If the customer makes a purchase or completes a desired action, the affiliate earns a commission.
  5. The merchant tracks these actions through cookies and affiliate software.

Key Players: Merchants, Affiliates, and Customers

1. Merchants (also called advertisers or brands):

  • Provide the products or services
  • Set up and manage affiliate programs
  •  Determine commission rates and payment terms

2. Affiliates (also called publishers or partners):

  • Promote the merchant’s products or services
  • Create content and drive traffic to merchant sites
  • Earn commissions based on performance

3. Customers:

  • The end-users who purchase products or services
  • May or may not be aware they’re using an affiliate link

Types of Affiliate Programs

1. Pay-per-sale (PPS):

  • Most common type
  • Affiliate earns a percentage of the sale amount

2. Pay-per-lead (PPL):

  • Commission paid for qualified leads (e.g., sign-ups, form submissions)
  • Often used in industries like insurance or education

3. Pay-per-click (PPC):

  • Affiliate paid for each click-through to the merchant’s site
  • Less common due to potential for fraud

4. Two-tier affiliate programs:

  • Affiliates earn commissions on their own sales and on sales made by sub-affiliates they recruit

5. Recurring commission programs:

  • Common in subscription-based services
  • Affiliate earns ongoing commissions for as long as the customer remains active

How Much Can You Earn as an Affiliate Marketer?

You can earn zero, a little, an excellent living, or more money than you ever thought possible. It’s all down to you.

Becoming an affiliate marketer has a low barrier to entry, which often means high competition. So, as a result, you’ll need to work hard. And, ultimately, you get out of affiliate marketing what you put in.

When you start, it’s not uncommon for your affiliate earnings to be small amounts that appear insufficient reward for your level of effort.

But everyone has to go through this initial start-up phase. Don’t quit early – you have to keep on working through this stage to make it successful.

One of the most successful affiliate marketers I’ve ever seen in action is a guy called Jason Fladlien.

Jason taught himself through years of trial and error how to expertly sell via webinars. He then put a support group and training together for Amazon sellers and sold the Amazing Amazon training course every time it launched with the bonus of joining his group.

I don’t know the exact numbers but he made hundreds of millions on a product he didn’t create himself.

However he’s the anomaly, most people don’t have or aren’t willing to learn his kind of sales skills.

A more relatable example is Pat Flynn who runs the Smart Passive Income website. Pat Flynn began his affiliate journey back in 2008 after losing his job in the global turndown.

At the start, to make himself accountable, he reported his monthly affiliate income. He kept up this practice for the next nine years; below is the final report he made public in December 2017.

screenshot of pat flynn income report for affiliate earnings

Over $105,000 of earnings from affiliate marketing in a single month!

Many people would be thrilled to earn $100,000 per year as an affiliate, and in fact in 2023 I generated $85,679 in revenue, from a mix of affiliate sales and sponsorship on my website (with no social media and no email list), before the hand of Google decimated my traffic.

Jo's 2023 income

If I can do it, there’s no reason you can’t do it too, no matter your age.

So let’s get started!

Affiliate Marketing for Beginners – A Step by Step Guide

1. Choosing Your Affiliate Niche

Selecting a niche is the first crucial step in your affiliate marketing journey.

A niche is a specialized sub-section of a broader topic. For example, instead of “fitness,” you might choose “yoga for seniors” as your niche.

  1. Start with your interests: Think about topics you enjoy or have experience in. Your passion will fuel your content creation and help you connect with your audience. Ask yourself: What do I love talking about? What skills do I have?
  2. Check if there’s demand: Use free tools like Google Trends to see if people are interested in your potential niche. Type in some keywords related to your niche ideas. Are the trends steady or growing? This indicates a healthy interest in the topic.
  3. Look at the competition: Search for your niche ideas on Google. Are there other websites covering this topic? Some competition is good – it means there’s a market. But look for ways you can offer something unique or better.
  4. Consider the money-making potential: Search for “[your niche] + affiliate program” to see what products you could promote. Check the commission rates. Are there enough products to promote? Remember, you need to balance your interest in the topic with its potential to earn income.
  5. Narrow it down: If your niche feels too broad, try to narrow it further. Instead of “dog training,” you might choose “puppy training for apartment dwellers.” The more specific you are, the easier it is to target your audience.

Remember, choosing a niche isn’t a lifetime commitment. You can always pivot or expand later. The key is to start with something you’re genuinely interested in and that has potential for growth.

For more guidance on niche selection, checkout my guide on how to choose a niche using AI to help.

2. Identifying Profitable Products or Services

Once you’ve chosen your niche, it’s time to find products or services to promote.

Here’s how to identify offerings that could be profitable for your affiliate marketing efforts:

  1. Spot what’s trending: Check out Amazon’s Best Sellers list for your niche if you want to promote physical products, or look at affiliate marketplaces like Clickbank, Impact, or Partnerstack for recommended programs . This gives you a quick idea of what’s popular right now. Also, keep an eye on industry news or blogs to spot new products or services that are gaining traction. What’s everyone in your niche talking about?
  2. Look at what you already use: Think about the products or services you currently use or have used in your niche. Do you have a favorite tool, app, or product that you genuinely love? These can be great starting points for affiliate promotion. Check if they have an affiliate program by visiting their website and looking for an “Affiliates” or “Partners” link, often found in the footer. You can also simply search “[product name] + affiliate program” on Google. Promoting products you personally use has several advantages:
    • You can speak authentically about their benefits and features
    • You’re already familiar with the product, making content creation easier
    • Your personal experience can provide unique insights that other affiliates might miss
    • You can honestly answer questions from your audience about the product
    • Don’t limit yourself to digital products. Physical products, services, or even local businesses in your niche might have affiliate programs. For example, if your niche is home fitness, you might already use workout equipment, fitness apps, or nutritional supplements that offer affiliate partnerships. Remember, even if a product you love doesn’t have an official affiliate program, you could reach out to the company directly. Some businesses, especially smaller ones, might be open to setting up a custom affiliate arrangement with you.
  3. Look at the commission details: When you find interesting products, check how much you could earn by promoting them. Some programs offer a percentage of the sale, while others give a flat rate. Higher commissions are great, but also consider products that customers might buy repeatedly. These can provide ongoing income.
  4. Quality matters: Your reputation is on the line with every recommendation. Read product reviews from real customers. What are they saying? If possible, try the product yourself. You’ll be much more convincing if you genuinely like what you’re promoting.
  5. Mix up your price points: Don’t just focus on expensive items. While these can lead to bigger commissions per sale, they’re often harder to sell. Include some lower-priced items too. These can be easier to promote and might lead to more frequent commissions. A mix of price points can help stabilize your income.
  6. Check for affiliate programs: Not every product you like will have an affiliate program. Search for “[product name] + affiliate program” to see what’s available. Some brands run their own programs, while others use affiliate networks like Amazon Associates or ShareASale.

Remember, the best products to promote are ones you believe in. If you wouldn’t recommend it to a friend, it’s probably not a good fit for your affiliate marketing business. Your enthusiasm for great products will shine through in your content and help build trust with your audience.

Starting out, don’t worry about finding the “perfect” product. Choose a few that fit your niche and start creating content around them. You can always add more or switch products as you learn what works best for your audience.

3. Build Your Affiliate Marketing Platform and Audience

The key to a successful affiliate marketing business is your audience.

If you have no-one to promote the offers to, you can’t make any money!

So once you’ve chosen your niche, and have an idea of the kind of products/services you want to promote, you’ll need to decide which platform you want to build your audience around.

And although there are a dizzying amount of options for you to choose from, I recommend just one main traffic funnel with multiple entry points!

Email Marketing: Your Core Strategy

Email marketing is the cornerstone of all successful online business models.

Unlike social media or search engines, your email list is an asset you own and control, as opposed to being at the mercy of ever-changing algorithms.

In my example of how I generated $85k last year from my website before Google changed all the rules, if I’d had a strong email list, google’s changing algorithms wouldn’t have had such a damaging effect on my income.

I can’t stress enough the importance of your email subscriber database and urge you to start building your email list from day one.

This direct line to your audience allows you to build stronger relationships, provide consistent value, and promote not just affiliate offers more effectively, but any products or services you may want to offer.

Here’s how to get started with email marketing:

1. Choose an email service provider. There are several great options to consider:

  • Beehiiv: A newer platform that allows for paid subscriptions, perfect if you’re considering a newsletter business model.
  • ConvertKit: Very popular among bloggers and marketers, offering all the bells and whistles you might need.
  • Aweber: An oldie but a goodie, known for its reliability and ease of use.
  • Flodesk: The cheapest option on this list, great for those just starting out.

2. Create a lead magnet and weekly newsletter:

  • Develop a valuable freebie (e.g., ebook, checklist, mini-course) related to your niche to entice sign-ups.
  • Plan a regular newsletter to keep your audience engaged.
  • Place sign-up forms prominently on your website and other content platforms (which we’ll discuss next).

3. Build relationships with your subscribers:

  • Send weekly or even daily emails to stay top-of-mind.
  • Ask questions and run polls to encourage engagement.
  • Share personal stories and insights to connect on a deeper level.
  • Provide consistent value related to your niche.

4. Monitor and improve:

  • Track key metrics like open rates, click-through rates, and conversions.
  • Regularly clean your list by removing inactive subscribers to maintain high engagement.
  • Test different subject lines, email formats, and send times to optimize performance.

Remember, your email list is more than just a promotional tool, it’s a community of people interested in your niche. If you nurture your community with valuable content, they’ll be more receptive when you do share affiliate offers.

Also as you grow your list, you can start segmenting subscribers based on their interests or behavior, allowing you to tailor your content and offers for even better results.

But don’t worry too much about advanced techniques when you’re just starting. Instead focus on consistently providing value and building relationships.

So now you have the most important part of your audience building system in place, publishing content on social media or building a website becomes a way for you to attract people on to your email list, rather than content for contents sake.

Let’s have a quick walk through all the content marketing options to attract people to your email list

Entry Points to Your Email Funnel

1. Website or Blog:

  • Choose a domain name relevant to your niche
  • Select a reliable hosting provider (e.g., Bluehost, WPX – my recommended hosting company)
  • Use WordPress or a similar CMS for easy management
  • Create essential pages (About, Contact, Privacy Policy)
  • Develop a content strategy focused on solving audience problems – see how to start a blog here

2. Social Media:

  • Choose platforms where your target audience is active
  • Maintain consistent branding across platforms
  • Share valuable content regularly
  • Engage with your audience through comments and messages
  • Include calls to action on your content to encourage email optins

3. YouTube:

  • Create helpful videos related to your niche
  • Optimize titles, descriptions, and tags for search
  • Include calls-to-action for your email list in videos and descriptions
  • Engage with viewers through comments

4. Podcasting:

  • Share your expertise through audio content
  • Interview experts in your niche
  • Mention your email list in each episode
  • Transcribe episodes for SEO benefits if you have a website

5. Online Communities and Forums:

  • Participate in discussions on Reddit or niche-specific forums/groups on LinkedIn/Facebook
  • Provide helpful advice without overtly promoting
  • Include a link to your lead magnet in your profile or signature

6. Webinars or Live Streams:

  • Host educational sessions related to your niche
  • Demonstrate products or answer questions in real-time
  • Collect email addresses during registration

Remember, the goal of all these platforms is to provide value, build trust, and ultimately guide people to your email list. Your email list becomes your owned audience, allowing you to nurture relationships and promote affiliate offers more effectively.

Start with one or two platforms that you’re comfortable with, and expand as you grow. Focus on creating valuable content that solves your audience’s problems, and use this to attract subscribers to your email list.

Play to your strengths here. There is no point in choosing a blog as your primary platform if you dislike writing. Similarly, if you shudder at the thought of speaking on camera, then YouTube might not be for you.

You can and will use the other platforms to support your primary content choice, but as you get going, it’s best to focus on a single platform. You can become overwhelmed simultaneously trying to grow an audience on multiple platforms.

Once you get some traction on your first-choice platform, then you can target others and may be able to afford a VA, or hire freelancers, to assist you in the process.

Content Marketing Tips

When approaching content creation for affiliate marketing, it’s crucial to have a coherent strategy.

Randomly emulating popular blog posts or viral videos won’t cut it. Your content needs to serve a specific purpose: connecting with your audience, addressing their pain points, and ultimately guiding them towards a solution (via your affiliate link).

Eugene Schwartz, one of the most successful copywriters of all time, developed a model that outlines different types of consumer awareness and the content messages most suitable for each stage of the customer journey.

This model is invaluable for affiliate marketers:

  1. Unaware: The prospect doesn’t know they have a problem.
Content strategy: Educate about the problem and its implications.
  2. Problem Aware: They know the problem but not the solution.
Content strategy: Discuss various solutions, including your affiliate products.
  3. Solution Aware: They know solutions exist but not your specific one.
Content strategy: Highlight the unique benefits of your affiliate product.
  4. Product Aware: They know your product but aren’t sure it’s right for them.
Content strategy: Provide detailed information, comparisons, and testimonials.
  5. Most Aware: They’re ready to buy but need a final push.
Content strategy: Offer incentives, limited-time deals, or bonuses.

5 levels of awareness

Schwartz’s model aligns with a fundamental principle of marketing: consumers don’t buy products; they buy solutions to problems. As David Ogilvy famously put it;

People don’t buy the drill, they buy the hole in the wall.

To effectively guide customers through this journey, you’ll need to create a variety of content types:

  1. Blog Posts: Great for SEO and in-depth information.
Example: “10 Signs You’re Wasting Time on Ineffective Workouts”
  2. Videos: Ideal for demonstrations and building trust.
Example: “How to Set Up Your Home Gym for Maximum Efficiency”
  3. Infographics: Perfect for sharing statistics and quick tips.
Example: “The Science Behind HIIT: Why It Works So Well”
  4. Podcasts: Excellent for in-depth discussions and expert interviews.
Example: “Interview with a Fitness Coach: Common Mistakes Beginners Make”
  5. Social Media Posts: Great for quick tips and engagement.
Example: “Did you know? Just 20 minutes of HIIT can burn as many calories as an hour of steady-state cardio!”
  6. Email Newsletters: Perfect for nurturing relationships and providing ongoing value.
Example: “Weekly Workout Tips: This Week – Mastering the Perfect Squat”

Remember, each piece of content should serve a purpose in your overall strategy. It should either:

  • Attract new audience members (top of the funnel)
  • Educate and engage your existing audience (middle of the funnel)
  • Guide ready-to-buy prospects towards your affiliate offers (bottom of the funnel)

By creating a mix of content that addresses different awareness levels and uses various formats, you’ll be able to meet your audience wherever they are in their journey. This approach not only helps solve their problems but also positions your affiliate products as the ideal solution, ultimately driving more conversions and commissions.

In today’s digital landscape, transparency is key. Internet users have become savvy at spotting product recommendations driven solely by financial gain.

More importantly, regulatory bodies worldwide have implemented rules requiring affiliates to be upfront about their relationships with merchants.

  1. Building Trust: Transparency builds credibility with your audience, leading to long-term relationships.
  2. Compliance: Following regulations protects you from legal issues and potential penalties.
  3. Industry Reputation: Ethical practices contribute to a positive perception of affiliate marketing as a whole.

1. Disclosure of Affiliate Relationships

Both the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the US and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in Europe require clear disclosure of affiliate relationships. Even if you’re outside these regions, it’s best practice to follow these guidelines.

Tips:

  • Place disclosures on the same page as affiliate links, preferably above them.
  • Use clear, unambiguous language that a reasonable consumer can understand.
  • Avoid hiding disclosures in small print or buried in other policies.

Example disclosure: “This post contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase through these links, I may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

Creative affiliates often use humor in their disclosures, which can help build trust. For example:

2. Honest Product Recommendations

Your content should provide real value beyond just promoting products. Be genuine in your recommendations to maintain audience trust.

Tips:

  • Only promote products you’ve used or thoroughly researched.
  • Discuss both pros and cons of products honestly.
  • Prioritize your audience’s needs over potential commissions.

3. Respect for Data Privacy

With increasing focus on data protection, it’s crucial to handle user data responsibly.

Tips:

  • Implement strong data protection measures on your platforms.
  • Be transparent about how you collect and use user data.
  • Comply with relevant data protection laws like GDPR.

4. Avoiding Misleading Claims

Exaggerated or false claims about products can damage your reputation and potentially lead to legal issues.

Tips:

  • Base your recommendations on facts and personal experience.
  • Avoid making unrealistic promises about product performance.
  • Use disclaimers where necessary (e.g., “Results may vary”).

5. Ethical Competitive Practices

While competition is natural, it’s important to maintain ethical standards in how you compete.

Tips:

  • Focus on improving your own offerings rather than disparaging competitors.
  • Avoid tactics like click fraud or cookie stuffing.
  • Respect intellectual property rights in your content creation.

Remember, these legal and ethical considerations aren’t just about you avoiding trouble. They’re also so you can feel great about building a sustainable, trustworthy affiliate marketing business.

By prioritizing transparency and ethical practices, you not only comply with regulations but also grow a loyal audience that values your honest recommendations.

5. Effective Affiliate Marketing Strategies for 2024

As we move into the second half of the 2020’s, successful affiliate marketing requires a blend of proven tactics and innovative approaches.

You’ll need to become adept at creating engaging content, building trust with your audience, and leveraging new technologies to stay ahead.

3. Prioritize value over sales:

  • Focus on helping your audience solve problems

  • Identify markets complementary to your current niche
  • Gradually introduce new product categories to your audience
  • Cross-promote between niches to maximize your reach

2. Mix different types of affiliate programs:

  • Balance high-volume, low-commission offers with high-ticket items
  • Combine physical product promotions with digital product offers
  • Explore both one-time and recurring commission structures

3. Leverage seasonal trends:

  • Create a promotional calendar based on holidays and events
  • Develop themed content to capitalize on seasonal interests
  • Plan ahead to maximize impact during peak buying seasons

Create Your Own Products

1. Develop digital products:

  • Use your products to establish authority in your niche
  • Offer exclusive bonuses with affiliate products you promote

2. Provide services:

  • Offer consulting or coaching related to your niche

Scale Through Outsourcing and Automation

1. Expand your content creation:

  • Hire writers, designers, or video producers to increase output
  • Ensure all outsourced content aligns with your brand voice
  • Use project management tools to streamline collaboration

2. Automate where possible:

  • Schedule social media posts in advance using tools like Buffer
  • Set up email marketing automation for nurturing sequences
  • Implement chatbots for basic customer service and product recommendations

3. Leverage data analysis:

  • Use analytics tools to track performance across all channels
  • Implement A/B testing for continuous optimization
  • Explore AI-driven tools for predictive analytics and personalization

It feels like a lot, but in all honesty you only need to focus on three main things;

  1. Content – Attract an Audience – Be authentic, valuable, and either entertaining, educational or inspirational (or all three)
  2. Lead Generation – Turn Your Audience into Engaged Followers
  3. Products – Turn Followers into Customers

The key to long-term success is to continuously adapt, learn, and prioritize your audience’s needs.

6. The Best Affiliate Marketing Programs for Beginners

There are several different ways to work with other businesses as an affiliate.

  • Affiliate Networks
  • Large Business Affiliate Programs
  • Programs Run by Individuals
  • Bespoke Arrangements Between You & The Product Creator

1. Affiliate Networks.

One of the easiest ways to cut your teeth in affiliate marketing is through an affiliate network. These companies manage the nuts and bolts of an affiliate program for numerous businesses, often grouped around themes.

Here are some examples.

Clickbank has been around for over 20 years and has 100s of digital products in most niches for you to promote. You can sign up to the platform for free, and there is no application process to go through. Just register an account and get started.

Shareasale has also been in business for over 20 years and manages the affiliate programs for a host of big-name brands. Their application process is more strict, requiring you have an existing website for review before they grant you access.

Other affiliate networks to consider include;

  • CJ Affiliate (formerly Commission Junction)
  • Awin (includes former Affiliate Window and ShareASale)
  • Rakuten Advertising (formerly LinkShare)
  • Impact
  • Avangate Affiliate Network
  • FlexOffers
  • PartnerStack
  • JVZoo
  • Tradedoubler
  • Pepperjam
  • TUNE (HasOffers)
  • Refersion
  • Partnerize
  • Digistore24
  • Skimlinks
  • Viglink (now part of Sovrn)
  • Admitad
  • Affiliate Future
  • CPA Lead
  • MaxBounty
  • ClickBooth

Remember, each of these networks has its own strengths, focus areas, and requirements. It’s important to research and choose the ones that best align with your niche and audience.

2. Large Business Affiliate Programs.

Global companies like Amazon and eBay run their own affiliate programs. It gives them more control over who they permit into the program, and the ability to quickly remove unscrupulous individuals who might harm their reputation through spamming.

The application process does not guarantee access. So you have to do some preparation work before you apply. But once a member, you can earn income with some of the world’s e-commerce giants.

screenshot of ebay partner network Main Landing Page

Large Business Affiliate Programs Include;

  • Amazon Associates
  • Fiverr Affiliates
  • Etsy Affiliate Program
  • Shopify Affiliate Program
  • eBay Partner Network
  • Walmart Affiliate Program

3. Programs Run by Individuals.

Modern technology has made it possible for individuals to easily manage their own affiliate networks, often leading to some of the most lucrative opportunities in the market.

Online courses by individual experts offer access to specialized knowledge and experience accumulated over years of dedicated work in a particular field.

For affiliate marketers, promoting these individual-led programs to a niche audience can be highly profitable. When an expert launches a new educational product, it has the potential to generate thousands of dollars in commissions within a short timeframe, making it an attractive option for savvy affiliates.

As an example Marie Forleo’s B-School is a premium training course for setting up and running an online business. It sells for $1999 and affiliates get paid a 50% fee, an incredible $999.50 per sale.

screenshot of marie forleo b-school website

Applicants for Maria Forleo’s affiliate program are screened first. As a beginner, you would have to build an audience and have some well-established content before applying for this type of affiliate opportunity.

However, you’ll come across products with affiliate programs as you delve deeper into your chosen niche. If you want to find out if a product has an affiliate program, a quick search with Google for ‘nameofproduct affiliate program’ usually finds it.

If you’re struggling to find products to promote, then why not become an affiliate for the company that aims to sell everything from A to Z – Amazon…

How To Start Affiliate Marketing With Amazon Associates

One of the easiest ways to get into affiliate marketing is via the Amazon Associates program.

As an Amazon Associate, you can earn a cut by promoting any of the three billion products available in the store. You receive a referral commission as a percentage of the sale value, depending on the product category.

Here is their current commission structure;

amazon associates Product category and fixed standard program fee rates

The rates shown above are not quite the full picture. Amazon also takes into account the volume of traffic you refer to the store and the percentage of people who then go on to make a purchase when calculating your commission.

Amazon uses a 24-hour cookie, so you only have a narrow window of time for your referred traffic to purchase to still qualify for a commission payment. The good news, however, is that the cookie applies to any purchase made in that time frame.

So if a shopper you referred to buy a toaster also buys some clothes pegs, you will earn a commission for both sales.

A Word of Caution. Amazon insists that you make three sales in the first 180 days following your account opening date. If you don’t meet this requirement, you will be removed from the program and prevented from re-applying.

Get your ducks in a row first!

Start building your platform and audience first until you get a steady flow of traffic, then register for an account.

What is Affiliate Marketing –FAQs

Affiliate marketing is a broad topic and is something only mastered over time with experience. However, below are answers to more of the common questions beginners have.

Is Affiliate Marketing Easy?

I would be deceiving you if I claimed that affiliate marketing is easy.

There is no doubt that affiliate marketing is a simple business model, though. Sign up for any of the thousands of affiliate opportunities, get traffic to your content, and encourage that traffic to buy through your link.

But starting an affiliate marketing business requires faith – it takes time to build up an affiliate business. Creating content and growing your audience is a long term undertaking.

It can take many months of hard work for little to no reward before you begin to earn any level of income. It’s perhaps why most wannabe affiliate marketers quit after a few weeks as they realise the scale of the task.

But many people take this leap of faith—people who are no more intelligent or capable than you. People who made a plan, executed, and stayed the course, who are now earning a top full-time income.

With affiliate marketing, you get out what you put in.

How Do Affiliates Get Paid?

Affiliates receive payments directly to their bank accounts from whoever manages the affiliate program.

If you promote several programs from one affiliate network company, then you will get a single payment for all the different programs you promote.

Payment is by direct deposit into your bank account, but some programs also offer payment by cheque, or in the case of Amazon, gift cards.

Be prepared for a wait for payments with some programs, though. Consumer rights and the potential for refunds often means a delay in your cash, as you wait out potential customer reimbursements.

It’s not unusual to receive payment for a sale you made four to six weeks later. And some affiliate programs have a minimum earnings threshold before they process your payment. These thresholds are usually generally low, however.

Each affiliate network or program run by individuals have different terms. Make sure you read the small print before you sign up for a program to check you are happy with the conditions.

Can I Start Affiliate Marketing With No Money?

It is completely possible to start affiliate marketing with no money. Simply create a free email account (most start free up to about 2500 subscribers), pick your platform and talk about what you love! Then, as you build your audience and traffic, add relevant affiliate offers.

How Fast Can You Make Money With Affiliate Marketing?

The answer to this question depends on you, your niche and brand and the amount of work you put in. With a strong brand, message, passionate audience and well copy written ads you could start making money immediately. However for the average affiliate marketer investing 5-15 hours a week into their business, expect minimal results for your first 3 – 6 months. The more consistent you are and the more momentum you create, the faster you’ll grow.

How To Choose A Niche For Affiliate Marketing?

Choosing a niche for your affiliate marketing business is an essential step as the amount of time and effort required before you start seeing a return can be lengthy. If you make the wrong choice, then it’s possible to become disheartened with online marketing itself and give up.

Essentially you need to consider all the aspects for a niche you intend to enter and answer several questions;

  • Are there plenty of products to promote?
  • Can this niche provide a sufficient ROI?
  • How competitive is this niche?
  • Does this niche have longevity?
  • Do I know, or can I learn enough about it, to be able to offer expert recommendations?
  • Is my interest in the niche high enough to sustain work over an extended period?

Once you tick the boxes for the above questions and more, you will instinctively know which is the niche for you.

How Do I Set Up Affiliate Marketing On Shopify?

Don’t think that if you sell physical products from a Shopify store that you can’t also make income as an affiliate. You are actually in a great position. If your store already has a niche and hopefully an audience, you simply need to add carefully chosen affiliate offers. If you’re starting from scratch, then follow the steps in this guide and send your email subscribers to the products on your store.

Starting an online business is an exciting journey, but for many aspiring entrepreneurs, the very first steps can feel like insurmountable obstacles.

Choosing your business model and niche are crucial decisions that often leave beginners paralyzed with indecision.

This guide will help you navigate these critical choices, understand why they’re so important, and show you how to leverage AI tools to gain clarity and confidence in your decisions.

Why These First Steps Matter:

1. Foundation for Success: Your business model and niche form the foundation of your entire online venture. They influence everything from your target audience and marketing strategies to your revenue streams and daily operations.

2. Focus and Direction: Having a clear model and niche gives you a roadmap to follow, helping you avoid the common pitfall of trying to do everything at once.

3. Passion and Profitability: The right choices align your interests with market demand, increasing your chances of long-term success and fulfilment.

Why People Get Stuck:

1. Analysis Paralysis: With so many options available, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and unable to make a decision.

2. Fear of Commitment: Choosing feels final, and many worry about picking the “wrong” option.

3. Lack of Self-awareness: Some struggle to identify their own strengths, passions, and skills.

4. Market Uncertainty: Concerns about profitability and competition can cause hesitation.

Now, let’s dive into how to choose your business model and niche, with detailed explanations and AI prompts to help you along the way.

1. Choosing Your Business Model:

A business model is how you’ll generate revenue. For online businesses, there are several popular models to consider:

a) Digital Marketing:

  • Creating and selling information products (courses, ebooks, membership sites)
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Becoming an online influencer
  • Author/ebook seller
  • Email Marketing
  • Blogging

This model is ideal if you have expertise to share or enjoy creating content. It often requires less upfront investment but demands consistent content creation and audience building.

b) Service-Based Business:

  • Freelancing (writing, design, coding, etc.)
  • Coaching or consulting
  • Starting an agency
  • SAAS Businesses

If you have specific skills or expertise that others need, this model allows you to start quickly with minimal overhead. It’s particularly suitable for those who enjoy working directly with clients.

c) E-commerce:

  • Selling physical products through platforms like Amazon FBA or your own store
  • Print-on-demand
  • Dropshipping
  • Etsy

E-commerce is great if you have product ideas or enjoy curating products for a specific audience. It often requires more upfront investment and logistics management but can scale well.

How to Choose the Best Business Model For You

Selecting the right online business model is crucial for your long-term success and satisfaction. Here’s a comprehensive process to help you make the best choice:

1. Assess Your Personality Type:

Extrovert: If you thrive on social interaction and feel energised by engaging with others, consider models like:

     • Education/Influencer: Online courses, coaching, YouTube channel, podcasting

     • Service-based businesses: Consulting, public speaking, live workshops

Introvert: If you prefer working independently and behind the scenes, you might be better suited for:

     • Author/Blogger: Writing ebooks, running a blog

     • E-commerce: Selling physical or digital products without being the face of the brand

     • Affiliate Marketing: Promoting products without creating your own

2. Evaluate Your Comfort with Visibility:

  • Comfortable being the face of your brand: Consider influencer marketing, personal coaching, or creating a personal brand around your expertise
  • Prefer to stay behind the scenes: Look into e-commerce, software development, or content creation where you can remain anonymous

3. Consider Your Natural Talents:

  • Strong communicator/teacher: Educational content creation, coaching, consulting
  • Analytical/data-driven: E-commerce, digital marketing agency, data analysis services
  • Creative: Graphic design services, content creation, digital products
  • Technical: Software as a Service (SaaS), web development, app creation

4. Assess Your Work Style Preferences:

  • Enjoy variety and multitasking: Agency model or consulting where you work on different projects
  • Prefer deep focus on one area: Specialised service provider or product creator

5. Consider Your Ideal Lifestyle:

  • Want ultimate location independence: Digital nomad-friendly models like blogging, affiliate marketing, or online courses
  • Prefer slower travel stability: Service-based businesses with long-term clients or e-commerce with physical products

6. Evaluate Your Risk Tolerance:

  • High risk tolerance: Startups, innovative product creation
  • Low risk tolerance: Freelancing, affiliate marketing, or starting with a side hustle

7. Assess Your Desired Level of Personal Interaction:

  • Enjoy one-on-one interactions: Personal coaching, consulting, or customised services
  • Prefer one-to-many interactions: Online courses, webinars, or group coaching programs
  • Minimal direct interaction: E-commerce, content creation, or software development

8. Consider Your Tech-Savviness:

  • Highly tech-savvy: SaaS business, app development, or tech-focused consulting
  • Moderate tech skills: E-commerce, digital marketing, or online course creation
  • Limited tech skills: Service-based businesses or partnering with a tech-savvy co-founder

9. Assess Your Skills and Expertise:

Make a list of your current skills, knowledge areas, and professional experience. Consider both hard skills (like coding or graphic design) and soft skills (like communication or leadership). This will help you identify business models where you can leverage your existing strengths.

10. Consider Your Resources:

Evaluate your available time, money, and support network. Some models require more upfront investment or time commitment than others. Be realistic about what you can commit to at this stage.

11. Research Market Demand:

Look into the potential customer base for each model you’re considering. Is there a growing demand for the products or services? Use tools like Google Trends, industry reports, and competitor analysis to gauge market potential.

12. Evaluate Scalability and Long-Term Potential:

Consider how each model aligns with your long-term goals. Can it grow with you? Some businesses are easier to scale than others, so think about where you want to be in 5-10 years.

13. Assess Risks and Challenges:

Each model comes with its own set of challenges. Be honest about which obstacles you’re willing and able to overcome. Consider factors like market competition, technological changes, and economic fluctuations that could impact your chosen model.

Remember, the goal is to find a sweet spot where your personal attributes and goals align with market opportunities and your available resources.

Take your time with this process. It’s worth investing effort upfront to choose a model that energises and motivates you, as this will be crucial for pushing through the inevitable challenges of entrepreneurship.

And remember, many successful entrepreneurs pivot or refine their model as they grow, so don’t feel that this decision is set in stone forever.

2. Choosing Your Niche: Defining Your Specialty in the Online Business World

What is a Niche and Why is it Important?

A niche is a specialised segment of the market for a particular kind of product or service. In the context of online business, it’s the specific area you focus on and the particular audience you serve.

Choosing a niche is crucial because it:

1. Helps you stand out in a crowded market

2. Allows you to become an expert in your field

3. Makes your marketing efforts more focused and effective

4. Helps you connect with a specific target audience

5. Can lead to higher profit margins due to specialisation

Here are some examples of popular niches, including broad categories, sub-niches, and micro-niches:

1. Health and Wellness

  • Broad: Fitness
  • Sub-niche: Weight loss
  • Micro-niche: Keto diet for women over 40

2. Personal Finance

  • Broad: Investing
  • Sub-niche: Retirement planning
  • Micro-niche: FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) for millennials

3. Technology

  • Broad: Smartphones
  • Sub-niche: iPhone accessories
  • Micro-niche: Eco-friendly iPhone cases

4. Personal Development

  • Broad: Self-improvement
  • Sub-niche: Productivity
  • Micro-niche: Time management for working parents

5. Hobbies

  • Broad: Photography
  • Sub-niche: Travel photography
  • Micro-niche: Smartphone travel photography for seniors

The more micro you can go the more specialised you will become and the faster you’ll attract an audience. However it’s notoriously hard for us to focus that tightly (FOMO and all that), so at the very least I recommend starting with a sub niche.

Steps to Choose Your Niche:

1. Make a List of Your Interests, Skills and Curiosities:

Write down everything you love to do, talk about, and are good at. This could include hobbies, professional skills, or topics you’re passionate about.

For example:

  • Cooking healthy meals
  • Solving tech problems
  • Practising mindfulness
  • Teaching languages
  • Analysing financial markets

2. Identify Your Target Audience:

Consider who you want to serve or connect with through your business. Think about demographics, psychographics, and behaviours.

For instance:

  • Young professionals looking to advance their careers
  • Retirees interested in travel and new experiences
  • New parents concerned about child development
  • Small business owners struggling with marketing

3. Assess Your Current Position and Future Goals:

Reflect on where you are now in terms of skills, experience, and resources. Then, consider where you want to be. This helps ensure your niche aligns with your long-term goals.

Ask yourself:

  • What expertise do I already have?
  • What skills do I need to develop?
  • Where do I see myself in 5-10 years?

4. Consider if You’re Your Own Target Market:

Sometimes, the best businesses solve problems you’ve personally experienced. Ask yourself:

  • What challenges have I faced that I’ve found solutions for?
  • What products or services do I wish existed?
  • What information did I struggle to find when I needed it?

5. Identify Market Needs:

Look for gaps in the market or areas where you could improve on existing offerings. Research forums, social media, and industry reports to find common pain points or unmet needs in your areas of interest.

6. Consider Profitability:

Research potential revenue streams and competition levels in your potential niches. Look at factors like:

  • Market size and growth potential
  • Existing competition and their offerings
  • Potential pricing strategies
  • Possible monetization methods (products, services, advertising, etc.)

7. Find the Sweet Spot:

The ideal niche is at the crossover of your interests, skills, market demand, and profitability. It should be something you’re passionate about, have (or can acquire) expertise in, has a clear audience need, and has the potential to be profitable.

How AI Can Help Choose Your Niche:

AI tools can provide valuable insights and speed up your niche selection process. Here are some prompts you can use:

1. Niche Idea Generation:

Based on my interests in [list interests] and skills in [list skills], can you suggest 10 potential niche ideas? For each niche, please provide a brief description and potential target audience.

2. Niche Validation:

I’m considering a niche in [your chosen niche]. Can you provide:

1. An analysis of current market demand and future outlook
2. Potential challenges and how to overcome them
3. Ideas for products or services in this niche
4. Suggestions for narrowing down to a more specific sub-niche or micro-niche

3. Audience Analysis:

For a niche in [your chosen niche], what are the key characteristics, pain points, and desires of the target audience? Please provide a detailed customer avatar.

4. Profitability Assessment:

Analyse the profit potential for a business in [your niche]. What are the main revenue streams, estimated startup costs, and potential challenges to profitability?

5. Competitive Analysis:

Who are the top 5 competitors in the [your niche] space? For each, provide their main offerings, target audience, and unique selling propositions. Also, identify any gaps or opportunities in the market based on this analysis.

Remember, choosing a niche is an important decision, but it’s not irreversible. Many successful entrepreneurs pivot or expand their niche as they learn more about their market and grow their business.

The key is to start with a focused niche that you’re passionate about and that has market potential, then be prepared to evolve as you gain experience and insights.

3. Quick Validation of Your Idea:

While thorough validation is important, you don’t want analysis paralysis to prevent you from starting. Here’s a simplified process to quickly validate your idea:

Use Google Trends to see if interest in your niche is stable or growing. This takes just a few minutes and can give you a quick snapshot of market interest.

2. Social Media Listening:

Spend 30 minutes browsing relevant hashtags on Instagram, Twitter, or TikTok. Are people actively discussing your niche? What questions or problems do you see recurring?

3. Reddit and Quora Search:

Spend an hour browsing relevant subreddits and Quora topics. Look for frequently asked questions and pain points in your niche.

4. Quick Competitor Check:

Find 3-5 businesses already operating in your niche. What are they offering? How can you differentiate yourself?

5. Micro-Test:

Create a simple landing page or social media post about your idea. Share it with your network or in relevant online communities. Gauge the response – are people interested? Do they have questions?

Remember, the goal at this stage is not to prove your idea is perfect, but to ensure there’s enough interest to warrant moving forward. You can (and should) continue validating as you build your business.

AI Prompt for Quick Idea Validation:

I’m considering starting a business in [your chosen niche] using [your chosen business model]. Can you help me quickly validate this idea by:

1. Suggesting 5 relevant hashtags to check on social media
2. Identifying 3 key questions to look for on Reddit or Quora that would indicate market demand
3. Listing 3 potential competitors to research
4. Proposing a simple offer I could use to test market interest
5. Identifying 3 red flags that might indicate this isn’t a viable idea

Please keep the suggestions practical for someone just starting out with limited time and resources.

Overcoming Common Obstacles:

1. Analysis Paralysis: Set a deadline for your decision. Remember, you can always pivot later if needed.

2. Fear of Commitment: Start small. Test your idea with minimal investment before fully committing.

3. Lack of Self-awareness: Use personality tests, seek feedback from friends and colleagues, or work with a coach to gain clarity on your strengths and passions.

4. Market Uncertainty: Thorough market research and validation can help alleviate these concerns. Remember, there’s rarely a “perfect” market – success often comes down to execution.

AI Prompt for Overcoming Obstacles:

I’m feeling stuck in choosing my business model and niche because [describe your specific challenge]. Can you provide:

1. 3 strategies to overcome this obstacle
2. 2 examples of successful entrepreneurs who faced similar challenges
3. A step-by-step action plan to move forward
4. Motivational advice to help me take the first step

If you’d love to know how to put your talents to good use and make money writing online, this post is for you!

The biggest challenge being a writer is that no matter how talented you are, you’re never guaranteed to monetize your art.

Unless you’ve built a big audience of people interested in your work, or are an ace at self promotion, your amazing wordsmithing could forever be hidden behind a bushel.

However, in this day and age of global reach online it’s easier than ever to make money writing online without ever having to become the next Pulitzer prize winner.

Here are 21 fun and actionable ways for you exercise your creativity and start to make money writing online.

1. Become a Blogger

If you love writing, you’ll love blogging!

Once you’ve created amazing content and google starts to rank you for it, many of your rankings will last for years, provided you consistently create new and valuable content around your topic, update your existing content and remain relevant in your niche.

However, it has become much harder to generate organic traffic in the last couple of years so you need to be prepared to drive traffic to your posts from a diverse range of traffic sources, such as Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn etc.

Plus you’ll need to be happy putting in a solid amount of effort up front, without instant reward. In fact it may take 6 – 12 months before you start to see any real traffic depending on the niche you’re in.

However, once that traffic starts rolling in, the only way is up!

Many bloggers make upwards of $10k, $50, $100k a month by creating consistent, valuable and relevant content.

To get started, choose your niche, create a simple wordpress site and start publishing! Focus on mastering keyword research, writing articles daily if possible and away you go.

2. Write on Medium

If you don’t fancy the thought of having to purchase a domain, hosting and starting a blog (although it’s super easy these days), start writing on Medium.

When you sign up for Medium’s partnership program, you have two options to get paid. As more Medium members spend more time reading your Medium articles you receive a share of their membership fee based on how long they spend reading your article.

So for example, if a member spends 10% of their time reading your article you get 10% of their monthly member fee.

The second route to make money writing online on Medium is to refer the app to others and get 50% for every person who becomes a Medium member. Currently, the membership fees are $50 for a year or $5 a month.

With both these opportunities you can see it’s a numbers game as membership fees are low, so my recommendation is to become a prolific writer on Medium (the same if you’re growing a blog) and really specialize in a specific niche so people know you for something and look forward to reading your articles.

3. Create and Sell Digital Products

Are you an expert in a specific field?

If so, you’re in a great position to create and sell educational resources to capitalize on your expertise.

Perhaps you love writing about cooking, gardening, cars or sports. Maybe you want to teach others how to make money writing online, help students with their writing processes, or create ultimate guides on fitness and health.

The world is your oyster, and your knowledge could be presented as an ebook, a PDF, online guides, even a scripted video course.

Information marketing is as old as the hills and the overheads are low. Simply package up your knowledge as a saleable PDF, ebook or newsletter and use a free sales site such as Gumroad or Substack to promote it.

Social media sites such as Twitter and LinkedIn are amazing for building an audience who will happily pay for your expertise.

4. Produce Scripts for Videos

Fancy yourself a scriptwriter?

Collaborate with video creators and write their scripts for them. So many great on screen talents know how to deliver a line but aren’t great at writing their own scripts.

Video content is growing year on year at an astonishing rate so this is an excellent opportunity to make money writing online.

You will find hundreds (if not thousands) of video creators seeking your talent on freelance sites such as Upwork or Fiverr, or you can simply contact video creators whose work you admire and ask if they require any assistance with their scriptwriting.

5. Start Website Copywriting

Copywriting is big business and is a great way to make money online for a beginner.

If you’re a good copywriter you can get paid very handsomely for sales pages, landing pages, video scripts, emails, even copyrighted blog posts.  As a beginner, you can use AI to help you write compelling copy.

Because copywriting is a skill in its own right the competition for great copywriters is less than for blog writers or ghost-writers for example.

Copywriting is about persuasive writing that leads the consumer to take action on your words.

You can get started by looking for contracts on sites such as Upwork or Freelancer (copywriting site), however as you start to build a reputation, word of mouth is huge in this market.

6. Write Long-Form Content for Websites

Long-form content includes blog posts or articles with word counts of 2k and above.

Many website owners and online businesses don’t want to create their own content. Even the best blogs sometimes use ghostwriters or contractors, alongside their in-house writing team to increase the amount of content they can publish.

If you can demonstrate that you also have SEO knowledge and can target specific keywords and write both for humans and the search engines, your skills are even more valuable.

Find contracts on Upwork, or sign up to a dedicated writing site like Writers Access to get regular writing jobs.

7. Publish Your Book

Someone once said ‘we all have a book in us’. (Not sure who said it so I may just have to take the credit).

If you’d love to write and publish your own book, there’s never been a better time to become a self published author.

Who needs traditional publishing houses?

Once you’ve created your masterpiece simply use the Amazon KDP program to upload your work and create a book for Kindle or a paperback. You’ll then be able to expand onto other platforms like IngramSpark which could see your book in traditional bookstores.

You can even make a lot of money by recording your book and uploading it to Audible.

The world is your oyster whether you’re a fiction or non-fiction author so what are you waiting for?!

8. Turn Your Writing Into Print on Demand Products

Do you love to come up with funny memes, or inspirational quotes?

Perhaps you write jokes, riddles or informational one liners.

If so, why not turn your writing into a T-shirt, mug or branded hat?

Print on demand gives you the opportunity to add your design to a multitude of blank products, provided by the print on demand company.

Most suppliers offer everything from iphone cases, yoga mats, shoes, socks, notebooks, cushions, you name it!

What started as primarily a t-shirt business has expanded into a wonderland of products!

A unique way to make money writing online is to simply design your one liners using a platform such as Canva and adding them to products that people would love to wear, drink out of, or display in their house.

Here’s a great example of a framed print with a simple but inspiring message for sale on Etsy.

9. Create Notes for Podcasts

Most podcast shows are accompanied by show notes and written articles, summarizing the episode, highlighting important parts and linking to mentioned resources.

Most podcast hosts do not want to write those notes themselves.

You could become a specialist at listening to and summarizing podcasts into fantastic notes which are super useful to listeners/readers.

Look for contracts on sites such as Upwork or approach podcast hosts directly and ask if you can work with them to improve their current podcast articles.

Not only do you get a chance to make money writing online, but you’ll also learn a ton by listening to podcasts you love!

10. Craft E-Commerce Content

A great way to make money writing online is to become a specialist in writing content for ecommerce sites.

With almost 70% of visitors to ecommerce websites abandoning a purchase at the cart stage, your job would be to create vivid product descriptions, clever upsell copy, and engaging, action led, cart abandonment emails.

With more and more online ecommerce stores being created and launched every day, store owners are increasingly looking for writers and copywriters to help them maximize sales.

Look on sites such as Upwork or Freelancer for ecommerce writing opportunities.

11. Work as a Translator

If you’re fluent in more than one language, a great method for making money online as a writer, is to work as a translator.

When we ran our 7 figure Amazon business, we hired writers from France, Italy & Germany to translate our product listings and follow up emails.

If English is your second language or you’re multilingual, consider becoming a translator for Amazon businesses, ecommerce stores, blogs and any online asset that could or should be translated.

12. Write Press Releases

Many traditional businesses still rely on the good old press release to distribute news about their company.

There’s an art to writing a press release and creating contacts in the news industry.

If you become a specialist in this area, you could potentially attract the attention of thousands of news outlets for your clients, helping them to spread important updates about their business, and generate leads, backlinks and profitable partnerships.

13. Become a HARO Specialist

Along the same lines as a press release writer but focusing more on short form content is writing responses for HARO (helpareporterout.com).

Many online businesses and blogs use HARO to distribute important news/facts and generate backlinks for their site.

Once again knowledge of how the news industry works and some contacts, plus the ability to write engaging information in just a couple of paragraphs are the key skills for this online writing opportunity.

connectively - the new home of Haro

A friend of mine has built a massive business as a HARO specialist. This is a very lucrative, sought after service.

14. Become an Influencer

You may believe that to become an influencer you need to be an amazing photographer or videographer. However, sites like Twitter and LinkedIn rely mainly on the written form of content creation.

If there’s a subject you love to immerse yourself in, consider writing about it in public. Love to travel, offer insights about traveling the world; love to read, write book summaries and highlights; love learning about web 3.0 and crypto etc, share your learnings with the world.

As you start to build an audience and community around your favorite subject, you can monetize by recommending others books or products, creating your own educational resources or simply getting paid by brands to advertise to your audience.

Another way to use your social media influence to make money writing online is to…

15. Become an Amazon Influencer

The main premise for becoming an Amazon Influencer is to write engaging product reviews that encourage visitors to make a purchase.

If you have a compelling and engaging writing style and are happy to review lots of products, this could be a good model for you.

Ideally you’ll already have an engaged audience on social media. If so you can can apply to become an Amazon Influencer and promote products via Amazon’s affiliate program

Once accepted you’ll be able to create your own storefront, review relevant products and promote them to your audience.

Yet another way to use your social media influence to make money writing online is to…

16. Start a Paid Newsletter

There was a time a few years back when it seemed email newsletters were dead. That was until the rise of Medium, followed by specialist newsletter apps like Substack and Beehiiv.

If you’ve done the hard work of building a social media audience, a great way to monetize it is to offer a paid newsletter.

As a writer you get to write articles every week (or every day) discussing your favorite topic and your subscribers get valuable information they’re happy to pay for.

You can start your newsletter for free and encourage subscribers to sign up to your paid plan for more exclusive content.

17. Become a Social Media Consultant

If you enjoy writing for social media but aren’t too interested in building your own audience, consider becoming a social media consultant/content creator for other brands and businesses.

Many companies know they need a bigger presence on social media, but don’t have the time or inclination to start posting themselves.

You might be responsible for creating Facebook posts, building and maintaining a presence on Twitter or LinkedIn, responding to comments or engaging with other accounts on Instagram, or even creating scripts for TikTok or YouTube videos.

You can charge per post, per hour or per month for your services and build up a regular client base to generate a reliable monthly return on your time.

18. Become a Professional Affiliate Marketer

In the very first point of this article I talked about becoming a blogger. Once you’ve started to generate a lot of traffic to your blog, you can make a lot of money by recommending other people’s products on your site and getting paid a commission every time you make a sale.

However, did you know there’s also a huge world out there of professional affiliates who make millions by promoting CPA (cost per action) offers for huge companies like sports betting apps, dating sites, travel apps etc.

If you’re awesome at persuasive copywriting and are willing to learn how FB Ads, TikTok ads etc work, you could make money writing online by specializing in creating ad copy for affiliate campaigns.

This kind of money making enterprise doesn’t just require great writing skills but also insights into human behavior, data analysis skills and good relationship building skills.

19. Get Paid to Write Guest Posts

One of the best ways for a blog to grow its authority online is to generate backlinks and one of the best routes to generate backlinks is guest blogging.

Unfortunately so many bloggers, me included just don’t have the time to either pitch for or write guest posts.

You could pitch your services to blog owners as a professional guest poster. Your job will be to outreach to other websites accepting guest posts, pitch topics and then write and submit the posts.

If you choose to specialize in this area you’ll need to demonstrate some basic SEO knowledge. Plus if you want to be in the top 1% of guest blogging freelancers, the ability to research sites, write engaging emails and take on the full responsibility of pitching, researching and writing the post will go a long way!

20. Become a Coach

If you love, love, love to write, then perhaps coaching others as a writing coach is your best bet to make money writing online.

Distill your best tips into a weekly newsletter, a blog or even a YouTube channel and start to build an audience.

As you grow you can offer one to one or group coaching to help other writers achieve their goals of becoming a published author, growing a blog, or simply making money by writing online!

21. Become a Freelance Writer

Many of the strategies I’ve discussed in this post are essentially for freelance writers. However, rather than specialize in any distinct area, you may simply want to become a generalist freelance writer.

This gives you the opportunity to find freelance writing work, on a job by job basis, only taking on freelance writing gigs you like the look of and are interested in.

One of the best sites for a real mix of varied writing tasks is Upwork.

To get started as a freelance writer, sign up to Upwork as a freelancer and create a profile including your experience, specialist areas and some examples of previous work. Then as business owners create job descriptions you bid for those you’d like the chance to work on.

Other writing services sites to consider include; Fiverr, Freelancer, Problogger Jobs Board, Writers Access, Perfect Essay Writing.

writes access main landing page

Once you’ve built up enough clients, reviews and a writing portfolio, you could expand and start your own freelance writing business, by taking on more clients and hiring your own team of talented writers.

The world is your oyster!

How to Make Money Writing Online; Summary

If you love to write and are looking for opportunities to start a writing career and make money online, hopefully this article has given you plenty of food for thought.

If you’re not sure which writing niche you want to specialize in (if any), sign up to a site like Upwork as a freelance writer and start bidding for as many contracts as possible to grow your experience and discover which writing jobs interest you more than others.

Good luck!

Did you know you can get paid to read books aloud?

How about that for a great way to generate extra income or fund your nomadic lifestyle?

Audiobook narration is a real thing and it can help you earn extra cash from anywhere. There are many websites that will pay you hundreds of dollars to be an audiobook narrator.

You don’t need to be a professional voice-over artist to get paid to read books aloud. But you must have a good voice and excellent reading skills.

You’ll also need great audio, which is more challenging on the road but doable with some creative thinking!

A great example of a successful voice over artist is Katie Hagaman who is one of the top voice actors on ACX.

Not only is she one of the top professional voice actors on ACX and Audible, but she’s also been a voice-over artist for many productions across YouTube, video games, commercials, books, and audiobooks.

What Does ‘Get Paid to Read Books Aloud’ Mean?

To ‘get paid to read books aloud’ means that you will be reading an entire book – cover to cover – and in exchange, you will get paid.

Tips for How to Get Paid to Read Books Aloud

1. Get the Right Equipment:

Image of a hightech Microphone with computer set up used for voice over

Obviously for something as important as audio quality you’ll need the right equipment. Even if you’re a travelling digital nomad, I suggest investing in a professional-grade microphone for the best recordings. (I use the DJI mic, which is small, convenient and incredible quality – not cheap, but worth every penny if you want to be able to record on the go!)

black set of Wireless Lavalier Microphone

Then when recording, make sure that the microphone is shielded from electrical appliances, fans, etc., that make white noise or brown noise.

So many cities around the world have co-working spaces with separate office areas. If not, just find a small, quiet room that’s got a flat sound, (like a broom cupboard), as opposed to an echoey room. Small hotel rooms, inside a car, even tapping up a local radio station to use a booth! A friend of mine records all her podcasts in her clothes closet!

Other equipment that you may need is a laptop (I do quite a lot of recording straight onto my phone though, so might not be necessary), headphones, a pop filter (depending on your mic), a mic boom arm (can attach to the side of a desk and attach mic and a pop filter), a shock mount, and audio compressor software.

If you are recording at home and you are anticipating a lot of outside noise from family members or pets, it’s important to soundproof your recording environment so that you can get quiet and balanced audio.

2. Sign Up for a Platform:

Screenshot of Voices-signup page

Sign up for a platform you like the look of as listed above and complete your profile. If you’re asked to submit a sample during registration, move on to the next step.

3. Find a Quiet Space & Record

Image of a woman in front of a microphone and reading a book

Record a sample with proper voice modulations. Ensure that there are no external sounds and that your audio is balanced.

If necessary, record multiple times and use audio editing software wherever needed. Take the best recording and submit it as a sample.

4. Submit & Earn

Image of a woman in front of her Mcbook counting moneys

After your profile is accepted, audition for available tasks. If chosen, record and create audiobooks. Make sure you read the entire piece before you start recording to get an idea about the characters and story.

You’re not just reading books aloud. You’re voice acting and hence, voice modulations are necessary for readers to enjoy a pleasant listening experience. (Although not too much, some voices are just downright irritating).

Once you have a clear understanding, record the audiobook and submit it for approval. Once approved, you’ll get paid!

How to Get Paid to Read Books Aloud: Summary

I love the world we live in now and the opportunities available online!

You can indeed get paid for reading books aloud, and if you are a star voice actor, you can make it your full-time career. And with a bit of creativity and forward planning you can even do it while travelling the world.

The amount you’ll get paid to read books online may not be high at the beginning, but as you keep building your portfolio and gain more experience, you can gradually increase your rates.

Make sure that you’re using only legit platforms to get paid to read books. Reading books aloud on platforms like YouTube or Facebook Live can land you in legal trouble.

I hope this helps. Good luck!

Why Turning Your Side Hustle Into a Lifestyle Business is Ultimate Freedom

As I write this I’m sitting in a cafe in Phuket, Thailand, supping an Americano before picking up my daughter, who’s just finishing up exams at an International school here, and meeting a friend for lunch at the beach.

Tonight I’m heading off to see another friend compete in a Muay Thai boxing match in Patong and this weekend we’re off to Singapore for a few days.

Update – She won!

My life, my time, and my location are my own and I generate an income via several unique side hustles I talk about below.

Some are simpler than others, none are easy, and most certainly not one is a way to ‘get rich quick’. To generate a steady, recurring income online takes time and dedication, but it is doable and, if you pick something you enjoy doing, it’s fun!

Because at our age who wants to grind away doing something we hate everyday?

So let’s have a look at all the different methods of starting an online side hustle, which, if you choose, over time can grow and turn into life changing income.

20 Potentially Life-Changing Side Hustles for 50+ Nomads

1. Become a Freelance Writer

Do you love to write, but haven’t yet published your best selling novel?

If that’s the case, consider embarking on a career as a freelance writer. This allows you to showcase your writing skills and get paid for your talent.

Decide the kind of writing you think you could take on such as blog writing, copywriting, ebook writing, creative writing, business writing etc.

Then simply sign up and create a profile on upwork.com, fiverr.com, or writersaccess.com. These platforms provide a vast marketplace for freelance writing opportunities. Once you’ve set up your profile, you can start exploring job listings and even set up job alerts to stay updated on the latest opportunities, and start bidding for weekend and remote jobs.

Pick topics and subjects you’re interested in and are confident you can do a good job with and earn anywhere between $0.04 – $0.20 a word depending on your skill levels.

You can even utilise AI Tools like ChatGPT or Claude to help! (Always check client requirements and rules around AI use)

Elna Cain started as a freelance writer and now runs her own freelance writing academy.

2. Become a Freelance ‘Anything’

I started with freelance writing as it’s one of the most popular and versatile freelancing jobs, but you can essentially freelance in anything. It depends what your particular set of skills are.

Perhaps you were a highly paid corporate PA in your previous life and would make an excellent virtual assistant, maybe you’re a whiz at accounts, love deep diving into research, can build Notion templates or have a degree in using Excel (it feels like you need a degree to work it out!)

Start by assessing your skills and interests. Then have a look through sites like upwork.com and fiverr.com to see what people are offering and for how much. On upwork you can also browse through the types of jobs available to pitch for.

When my husband had a go at freelancing a few years back he was getting paid $50 an hour for 20 hours a week job within his first couple of weeks on the platform. That’s how fast you can get started and earn enough for your travels!

Embracing freelancing as a side hustle can empower you to utilize your skills and contribute to the success of various businesses while enjoying the flexibility of remote work.

3. Become a Published Author

Sticking with the writing theme, it’s never been easier to publish your writing. No agent needed or publishing house required. You can manage the entire process from your laptop and have your book available to the world for under $100.

E. L. James, one of the most famous self-published authors, has a net worth of $150 million from her Fifty Shades trilogy, which started out as Twilight Fan-fiction. James’s success demonstrates that you don’t have to be established (or even a good writer!) to make it as an author.

Screenshot of Fifty shades trilogy selling on Amazon
Fifty Shades Trilogy by E L James – get on Amazon

That said, it helps if you give yourself a fighting chance. Innumerable authors never strike it rich writing their own fiction stories. But there are plenty of writers making a good living as authors of non-fiction books that educate and solve readers’ problems.

Amazon KDP is the platform that enables you to publish your manuscript and make it available to millions of Kindle e-book readers. You can set your own price, and you keep 70% of the profits.

Know all about Gardening or Yoga? Write down your guidance in a way that solves problems for readers. Kindle books are often impulse purchases, and millions are sold every year.

You don’t have to write a long book, either. Short 70-page books are common in the non-fiction categories.

4. Become a Videographer (or Photographer)

If you’re already travelling, chances are you’re taking loads of photos or video footage. And if you fancy yourself a bit of an amateur David Bailey, then becoming a modern-day photographer, videographer, or video blogger could be for you.

So many companies and small businesses want to tap into the image/video-based economy we’re now living in and so honing your photography or videography skills will go a long way to creating a lucrative side hustle.

If you already have a million photos gathering dust in google photos or iphoto, why not start monetizing by selling images to stock photo sites like depositphotos.com or istock.com?

Even better, upload your photos to an Etsy store and sell them as wall art or digital images.

Screenshot of selling art on etsy

As a photographer, you can even take advantage of print-on-demand sites like Redbubble.

5. Sell on Redbubble

Redbubble is a print-on-demand marketplace, meaning they house a catalog of blank products for you to add your designs to.

Products include t-shirts, mugs, canvases, face masks, clothes, candles, home decor, etc.

Your job is to create your own Redbubble storefront on their platform, add your images to their products and then sell like crazy.

If you’re a natural graphic designer, love playing with apps like Canva, or have a stack of unused images you want to monetize, a site like Redbubble could start to generate regular income for you.

These days you can also get creative using AI powered digital art on sites like Dall.E and Midjourney.

Please note though, success on Redbubble means creating hundreds if not thousands of new products on a very regular and consistent basis.

Screenshot of products sell on redbubble

6. Start a Blog

Blogging has changed significantly just in the last 12 months.

Google is preparing for the new AI landscape with their SGE (Search Generative Experience), which means niche sites once able to rank easily for long tail keywords can’t rank at all anymore, and have pivoted from Google to Pinterest and Social Media to drive traffic.

The days of throwing up a site in a targeted niche, proliferating it with content and waiting for Google to send you loads of traffic are gone. However, I still love the blogging model, and although my site is part of my larger brand, there is still a way to start and monetise a niche blog.

Here’s how;

  1. Pick a topic you feel happy creating a ton of content around and most importantly has a passionate target audience. Think gardening, pets, health, relationships, parenting etc.
  2. Create a simple website using WordPress (I recommend WPX for your hosting).
  3. Start creating valuable content with your target audience in mind. Pick headlines that would work well on social media (simply research your niche on Pinterest, Facebook etc for topic ideas).
  4. Create a Facebook Page using the same name as your website and start posting daily memes, images, tips. Anything that will resonate with your audience and that they can identify with (hence the passionate audience).
  5. As your audience grows, begin to publish your posts to drive traffic to your website.
  6. Create a lead magnet and start a weekly newsletter to grow a subscriber base around your topic and increase traffic further. Plus you’re building a list of people you can make other offers to, or accept advertising or sponsorship.

NB: This whole process is significantly accelerated by the use of ads. Facebook Ads & Pinterest Ads in particular. To make that work without losing your shirt, you’ll need a funnel and an impulse product that a percentage of people buy when signing up to pay for your ads. That’ a whole other post, but this at least gives you an idea of how to get started.

To monetise, you’ll have display ads on your website or you can offer physical or digital products or even services. The world is your oyster!

7. Sell Products on Amazon

If you’re prepared to put the work in, this model is life changing. I know that because it changed our lives!

Amazon has a program called FBA (fulfillment by Amazon). This means that they handle all the picking, packing, and distribution of products from their warehouses.

Your job is to source products to sell on the Amazon marketplace, negotiate with manufacturers and suppliers, ship the products to the warehouses, then list and promote your products on and off Amazon.

While this does require upfront investment to purchase stock, it’s a very lucrative business model. However, it’s not the easiest business model out there and Amazon are not the easiest company to work with.

My husband & I generated over 7 figures within a year on Amazon and you can read our story here.

Screenshot of sample amazon fba sales one year

8. Become a Online Retail Arbitrager

An option that requires less investment but still takes advantage of the Amazon platform is online arbitrage.

If you love to shop online (and let’s face it, who doesn’t), this could be the ideal side hustle for you. Plus it’s something you can start immediately for minimal investment.

The goal is to find great products at rock bottom prices, that you can resell on the Amazon platform for a profit.

Jim Cockrum from Proven Replen Training is my recommended go-to resource for all things retail arbitrage. He and his team have helped thousands of people to earn over 6 figures a year with this method.

9. Become a Social Media Manager

If posting on Instagram is your jam or editing clever videos for TikTok, you could soon pick up work managing someone else’s social media account.

Social media management is tricky as you’ll need to come up with creative ways to tell interesting stories around the business and likely spend a fair chunk of time nagging the business owner for content.

But it can be an extremely rewarding job, particularly if you’re spending your days coming up with awesome content ideas, engaging with other social media accounts, and watching that follower account increase!

To earn money fast, sign up for upwork.com or fiverr.com today and start pitching for work, showcasing your own social media account as proof of how creative you are!

10. Sell Your Skills as a Web Designer

These days it is easier than ever to become a web designer.

With easy WordPress page builders such as Elementor or the Generate Press or Kadence themes and full-service website builders like Wix, if you’re creative and love tinkering with WordPress and websites perhaps this is the side hustle for you.

Prices vary wildly in this niche and depending on the types of clients you pitch to depends on how much you can charge.

For example, online business owners who know their way around platforms like WordPress, but don’t have the time to tinker with their own site will expect to pay far less than a small off-line business with no website experience.

Looking on Upwork, developers are charging anywhere from $15 – $200, with the average fee being around $20 – $50/hour.

11. Create & Sell Online Courses

Another fantastic side hustle is to create and sell an online course to your audience.

If you created a $200-$500 course, packed to the brim with expert guidance on a very specific topic, you could stand to earn tens of thousands of dollars a month, even though you may only receive a few thousand visitors to your site.

As you’d imagine, building and promoting an online course doesn’t happen overnight.

You’ll need to grow your audience, build an email list and create a compelling sales funnel leading people to your online course sales page.

Key takeaway: Focus on building your email list from the outset. That way, you have a list of people you can sell your online course to in a few months’ time.

12. Sell Digital Printables on Etsy

Another great side hustle, particularly if you’re creative, is to sell digital printables on Etsy.

Simply head to Etsy and research a niche you’d love to be in. Weddings are big business on Etsy as are downloadable coloring books, printable wall art, printable stickers and labels, greeting cards, games & activities, planners and journals, and loads more!

Choose your niche and look at the best-selling items within that niche.

Head over to Canva to see if they have any pre-made templates you can use to quickly and easily create your own version of some of the best-selling products.

Create your Etsy store, add your Etsy digital downloads and printables, create keyword-rich listings, add super attractive images of your products and jump on social media to let the world know your products are live!

You may need to invest in some Etsy Ads to help promote your products and generate extra cash to get things rolling, but as you start to generate sales and reviews any new products you launch will likely take off much faster.

13. Become a Social Media Influencer

It can take time to build up a big enough following to be seen as a social media influencer, but this is a fantastic side hustle and way to generate a full time income for a long time.

Plus if you focus on TikTok or YouTube shorts you could be making extra money in just a few weeks.

If you love to create content, have no issue with being in front of the video camera, and have a natural creative lean, becoming an online influencer will probably suit you to a tee.

These days you don’t even have to get in front of the camera to make super engaging and popular videos. There are lots of different types of videos you can make instead such as;

  • Unboxing videos
  • Animated explainer videos
  • Cooking videos with a top-down camera
  • Screen-recording videos showing how to use software
  • Motivation videos using stock footage clips
  • Travel videos

You are only limited by your imagination.

TikTok and YouTube shorts are currently putting everything behind launching new creators and rewarding them for their views and engagement. TikTok celebrities have reported going viral within a few weeks and the more views you get, the more money you make!

Have a look at the kind of content that’s currently doing well on both platforms and start to test your own ideas for your own business. Be prepared to post consistently and often, to test as many strategies as possible and see what resonates with your target audience.

14. Dropshipping

A low-cost and fairly simple side hustle in the e-commerce world is dropshipping.

Dropshipping simply means that you as the seller create an online store and brand, source and advertise products relevant to your niche.

Once a customer makes a purchase, the product is shipped directly from the manufacturer to the customer.

You make the difference between the price you charge the customer & the price the manufacturer charges you.

For example, let’s say you’re in the jewelry niche. You find a lovely silver bracelet you want to sell on a dropshipping marketplace.

The manufacturer is charging $10 per bracelet. You might advertise that bracelet on your site at $30. When a customer buys, the bracelet is shipped directly to the customer & you generate a $20 profit minus other costs.

You never actually own or see the bracelet (except if you ordered samples). You’re effectively getting paid for good advertising!

The goal is to build a strong brand and use dropshipping as a way to test your market before shelling out for private label products yourself.

NB: Due to the low barrier to entry this is an extremely competitive business model. You’re main daily work will be in mastering ads platforms and ad copy. So even though it’s free to start, you will need some up front investment for ads!

15. Start a Podcast

A fun and potentially lucrative side hustle idea for nomads is podcasting!

If you like talking to people to entertain, educate, or inspire, then consider launching a podcast.

Screenshot of sample podcasting profiles

There are podcasts for literally all the topics under the sun from starting a business online to crypto, history, book reviews, parenting, weight loss, cooking, mindfulness, relationships, you name it!

To launch a podcast that has a chance of success, first listen to other popular podcasts to see what kind of content they produce, and how they structure each episode.

Many podcasts follow a few common formats. There is the interview podcast, the solo monologue podcast, or the conversational podcast where the same presenters host the show each week and talk about a niche topic in detail.

To monetize, as your audience grows you can attract significant sponsorship to your podcast and build an entire business using just your podcast only.

However, there are a variety of other ways to make money podcasting including; affiliate offers, selling online courses, using it to talk about your physical products, networking, and building relationships to get speaking gigs or publishing deals, or building an online following for another digital asset, like a website.

If you get to the top, you can charge your most adoring fans for exclusive content. And, if you’re lucky, land a deal with a top podcast publisher like Apple and Spotify for millions of dollars.

16. Launch a Print On Demand E-commerce Store

Earlier I talked about selling print-on-demand products on Redbubble.

Another awesome side hustle that requires minimal upfront investment is to launch your own print-on-demand e-commerce store, offering you the opportunity to generate extra cash.

As a quick recap, print on demand says what it does on the tin.

You advertise a blank product from a print-on-demand marketplace adorned with your designs. When a customer purchases, much like dropshipping, the product is shipped directly to the customer.

You pocket the difference between what you charge the customer & how much the product costs you.

You’re unfortunately limited to selling only the products available on your print-on-demand marketplace of choice, but these days sites like Printful & Printify offer hundreds of options.

I personally love this business model & even though profit margins are lower due to the high costs of print-on-demand products, if you attract enough sales, it’s a great way to earn money online.

17. Become a Coach

If you are a naturally compassionate person, a good listener, and have the ability to direct, encourage, and guide fairly but firmly, you are perfectly suited to become a coach.

Here are a few steps to help you get started on your coaching journey:

  1. Pick your niche: Determine the area in which you want to specialize, such as life coaching, business coaching, health and wellness coaching, or relationship coaching. Focusing on a specific niche will help you target your ideal clients more effectively.
  2. Choose your coaching style: Decide whether you want to offer one-on-one coaching, group coaching, or a combination of both. Consider which style aligns best with your skills, preferences, and target audience.
  3. Build an audience: Select a platform that resonates with you and your target audience, such as a blog, podcast, YouTube channel, or TikTok. Consistently create and share valuable content related to your coaching niche to attract potential clients and establish your expertise.
  4. Grow your email list: Encourage your audience to sign up for your email list by offering a lead magnet, such as a free e-book, worksheet, or mini-course. This will allow you to nurture relationships with potential clients and keep them engaged with your content.
  5. Sell your services: Offer webinars or live streams to provide value-packed presentations or workshops. At the end of each session, invite attendees to sign up for your one-on-one or specialized group coaching programs. People who have spent an hour or more engaging with you during a webinar are more likely to invest in your coaching services compared to those who simply read a blog post or follow a link in your social media bio.

By following these steps and consistently providing value to your audience, you’ll be well on your way to launching a successful coaching career.

You can also join coaching organizations such as The Life Coach School, where you’ll receive training and certification.

18. Become a Canva Graphic Designer

If you have an eye for design you could become a graphic designer or a specialist Canva graphic designer, allowing you to earn extra cash.

Selling pre-made Canva templates is big business online these days (potentially making $1000 a day) and you can sell them directly on social media, on Etsy, or on your own site, catering to the needs of both online and local business owners.

Sell your graphic design services online on sites such as upwork.com or fiverr.com anywhere from $5 an hour to $35 an hour.

Or sell bundles of templates like the awesome Biz Sister.

19. Get Paid to Read Books

How amazing would it be, to start a side hustle by getting paid to read other people’s books!

Well, these days you can.

Either as a book reviewer or as a book narrator.

Sites such as Kirkus Media, Reedsy Discovery, and Women’s Review of Books, all pay for intelligent, well-thought-out, and well-written, book reviews.

Or if you like the thought of narrating books, sign up with companies such as Audible and ACX and start reading books aloud for money! (This is a tougher gig on the road, as you will need super professional audio, but you could set yourself up in one place for a short period while you do the recordings.)

If you love to read, then proofreading, editing, reviewing. or narrating books are all fun and lucrative side hustles for 50+ nomads.

20. Start an Email Newsletter

Last but not least on my list of side hustles for 50+ nomads, is to start an email newsletter.

Pick a topic or niche that you love to talk or write about. It could be health, parenting, menopause, fashion, finance, crypto, leadership, meditation, yoga.

Any topic you know that has a large passionate audience.

Create several weeks’ newsletters in advance so you can get started with a few week’s content in the bank and sign up for an email platform like Flodesk, ConvertKit or Aweber. Or, use specialist newsletter services like Substack or Beehiiv, which make it easy to create paid subscriptions.

Then choose your promotional platform, whether it be Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, etc, and start to post content daily, always with a link to join your weekly newsletter.

Over time, you can monetize your email list either via affiliate offers, your own products, or if you use a service like Beehiiv, even charge for the newsletter itself.
